Representing Home Education

February 2, 2009

This picture appeared in the Lawrence Journal-World on Monday, February 2. You can click on the picture to go to the newspaper's website and read the story.

We were recently interviewed by the local newspaper, Lawrence Journal-World. They were doing a story on the fact that there was a spike in the number of home-schooled children in the past year and that more children are homeschooled than ever (since they started keeping stats).

It was an exciting adventure for us because they also did a TV spot for the local news. You can view that by clicking here. We were also interviewed in May 2007 for a series of stories about home schooling in Kansas. In that series, Abigail and Josiah made the front page in a pretty neat action photo.

We’re not really evangelists for home schoolinig, but when we’re given the chance to explain why we do it we will happily do so.

Like I said in the interview, we don’t ever want to come across as judgmental toward those who don’t home school. We just think we’re choosing what is best for our family.

Three years in Kansas!

October 26, 2008

It’s hard to believe, but we’ve now been in Kansas over 3 years! It’s been a roller coaster ride, but like the grandmother on “Parenthood” (old Steve Martin movie), We “prefer the roller coaster.”

2008 has been a great year for our family. Nothing monumental, just enjoying life together.

Family Scrapbook

Beth recently put together some scrapbook pages. It was a lot of fun to sort through pictures. You can take a look if you’d like. I’ve put all 22 pages into pdf format. Click here.

Update on 5 great kids

January 16, 2008

Beth wrote this in an email to some old friends who recently contacted us. We thought it was a pretty good update to start the new year:

hannah-mug2.jpgHannah is in 3rd grade and very artistic and creative. She’s very slow and careful with her work – she wants it to be just right. She’s very sensitive, very helpful to her mother and plays really well with the younger ones. She’s always making up “shows” that they (the oldest three or four) perform for us.

abigail-mug2.jpgAbigail is in 2nd grade and loves to read and to write her own stories. She’s very quick to get her work done so she can play. She’s also very helpful and plays really well with the younger ones and has a great imagination.

josiah-mug2.jpgJosiah is in kindergarten this year and loves to be “reading” like his big sisters (he guesses the words based on the first letter sound). He adores his little sisters and is constantly hugging and kissing them and laughing at the funny things they do.

lydia-mug2.jpgLydia is 2 ½ and thinks she’s just as big as everyone else. She’s very outgoing and independent – so different from the older girls. She’ll disappear into her room several times a day and come out with a different outfit on sometimes matching, sometimes not, or completely naked, we never know what to expect.

mary-mug2.jpgMary is 11 months – she’ll be one on February 15th. She’s very, very sweet and laid-back. She didn’t crawl until just this past month – she was just content to sit with a few toys and watch everyone else run around. She hugs all her toys, especially baby dolls, and says “aaaahhhh” and pats them – she’s very loving.

Christmas Play

December 26, 2007

Hannah and Abigail were angels. Josiah was a sheep. It was a simple Christmas play on Sunday, December 23, but they had a great time and we were all impressed. The entire thing was memorized Scripture. All the kids memorized a portion of Luke 2 and it was excellent. Here are a few snapshots.

Kansas LePagesWe finally got a new family portrait. We’re pretty happy with it considering it’s pretty tough to get all five to smile (or at least not cry) at the same time. Hannah is 8, Abigail is 6 (7 in a few days), Josiah just turned 5, Lydia is 2 (she tells everyone) and Mary is 10 months.

Beth’s Album

November 7, 2007

beth-cd.jpgOne of the more exciting things that happened last year was Beth’s album. A friend of ours really likes her voice and gave her a gift of studio time at a local recording studio. She got nine songs ready and sat down with her guitar and cranked them out–Beth LePage unplugged. Enjoy!

Two years in Kansas!

October 1, 2007

Time – they say – passes quickly when you’re having fun.

We must be having fun! It’s hard to believe it’s been over two years since we packed up and left Texas, but that is the case. This second year has been good. Interesting. Fun. And yes, hard at times.

Our family is healthy and happy and we’re enjoying each day of this season in our children’s lives. God gave us our Mary this past year and we will always be grateful that we didn’t stop God’s blessings at four.

Community Bible Church is doing well. In all those tangible, measurable ways (e.g., new members, finances, guests, etc.) we had a little better year than the year before and the year before (2006) was a lot better than the years before that, so we are encouraged. We have lots of new people with a fresh outlook on things. We started a friendship with a black church in Topeka recently and everyone is really enjoying that. We invited their pastor and praise team to participate in our Worship Conference at the end of October. Not sure where it’s going, but right now it’s just fun being friends with them. We did our first Passover last year and it was a huge success. We’re seeing the lights come on for some new believers who are faithful to Bible study. We’re seeing individuals practicing the one-anothers in ways that are uncomfortable at times, but very rewarding for all involved. We’re also seeing new friendships replacing lost ones (churches in transition tend to see that sort of thing).

But, like any church, we have our share of problems and issues that need to be resolved and these can be very exhausting. God is good, though, and continues to put encouragers into our lives precisely when we need them. There are many intangible things that happen which reveal true, spiritual growth. If we’re too focused on numbers, finances and guests and such things, we may miss the intangibles.

In our own personal lives we see these intangibles most clearly. God is making us stronger and wiser and more determined than ever. We are closer than ever and that’s saying a lot. We’ve always been very happy and close. We’ve both (especially Beth) had to step up and lead in ways that are out of our comfort zones. It is in those times that God seems to make His presence felt in special ways.

We get discouraged at times. Frustrated. Disappointed. But we think this means we’re really doing something important. Exactly what God wants us to do. We just want to be faithful. To someday hear Him say, “Well done, good and faithful slave. You were faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your Master.”

“The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brethren. Amen.”

Mary Hope LePage

February 15, 2007

maryhope.jpgMary Hope LePage was born early this morning (4:51 a.m.), February 15, 2007. She and Beth are doing very well despite the fact that they had to endure an emergency C-section. The umbilical cord was wrapped around Mary’s head and every contraction was cutting off her blood and oxygen. Her heartbeat kept dropping dangerously low, so we ended up in OR instead of L&D.

Mary weighs 9 lbs, 2 oz. and is 21 inches long. She is very strong, healthy and alert. She is also very pink and her lungs are clear. We are praising God for watching over these twomary2months.jpg ladies and for having mercy on us. After the doctor told me what she needed to do, I asked if I could pray for her. She said, “Please”. After I prayed for her — and Beth and Mary, of course — the doctor looked up and said, “I prayed too on my way here this morning.” Somehow I knew things were going to be okay.

Homeschool Field Trip – Kansas Day

January 29, 2007

2007-02-15-kansas-day-020.jpgOne of the great things about homeschool is that the whole family can go along on field trips. We all went to Topeka for Kansas Day on this beautiful day in January. We started out in our covered wagon and then spent the night around a camp fire (actually just the Kansasabigail-our-little-girl-on-the-prairie.jpg Museum of History). The kids got to do lots of hands-on things including walking through a real train, going into an authentic Indian tee-pee and getting to dress up in pioneer clothes (is that Laura Ingalls or our Abigail?).

After the Kansas Museum of History, we stopped by the Capitol Building where we got a photo-op with Abraham Lincoln and the two big girls ran up the capitol steps.
